Rare bicentennial quarter worth $200,000 might be in your pockets

Bicentennial quarters, a unique coin series minted in 1976 to mark the United States’ 200th anniversary, could be worth anywhere from $19,200 to $200,000, according to Texas-based high-end antiques and collectibles business Chronicle Collectibles.

These quarters, like most, feature George Washington’s head on one side. However, instead of the usual eagle on the reverse side , these coins depict a Revolutionary soldier drumming.

The value of each quarter in this set varies based on factors such as the mint it came from, its type, any errors, and other characteristics. While most are still worth just $0.25, some models can fetch thousands at auction if you’re lucky enough to have them.

Chronicle Collectibles explains that some Bicentennial Quarters were ‘clad,’ meaning they were made from multiple layers of different metals. The rest were made of 40% silver, which are more valuable.

While no Bicentennial Quarter has ever sold for $2.5 billion, a popular claim that’s likely exaggerated, rare versions of the Bicentennial Quarter have fetched thousands or even millions at auctions.

The value of a rare quarter is also determined by demand among collectors. A clad Philadelphia Bicentennial quarter, typically without any lettering, once sold for around $1,200 in 2022.

A Denver “D” Bicentennial quarter, also clad, fetched over $6,400 in 2017. WBCIA reported that one 1976 Bicentennial sold for a staggering $201k, although this information couldn’t be verified by the Mirror. Another report from AL.com says another 1976 bicentennial quarter recently sold for $19,000.

If you suspect you have a valuable coin, it’s recommended to take it to a professional coin appraiser in your area.
