Most 1964 Jefferson nickels you’ll find in change are only worth face value. But a few rare varieties from this year can be worth thousands of dollars at auction. Here’s what makes them special:
1-Philadelphia Mint Nickels
Over 1 billion nickels were struck in Philadelphia in 1964. Most are common, but the rare ones with Full Steps on Monticello’s staircase can be worth big money. In top condition, one sold for $14,100.
2-Denver Mint Nickels
The Denver Mint produced 1.8 billion nickels in 1964. While generally common, a few prooflike examples—highly polished and reflective—have sold for $4,000.
3-The Mystery Special Mint Set Nickels
In 1964, the U.S. Mint secretly struck a small batch of Special Mint Set (SMS) nickels. These weren’t officially released but were later discovered in the Mint Director’s personal collection. They feature sharp details and a satin-like finish. Today, they are among the rarest nickels in existence, with examples selling for $32,000+.
4-Proof Nickels
The Mint also produced 3.9 million proof nickels in 1964. These shine with mirror-like surfaces and can sell for thousands in the highest grades.
