On the right is one of the rarest and most sought-after U.S. coins, likely the famous 1944 Steel Lincoln Cent, which has reached values as high as $216,000 at auction.
In 1944, during World War II, the U.S. Mint was supposed to be making pennies out of copper saved from spent shell casings. However, a few leftover steel planchets from the previous year (1943) were accidentally struck with the 1944 date, creating an ultra-rare transitional error. Only a handful are known to exist today.
