Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin, who first sparked romance rumors in late 2017, have broken up after nearly eight years together.
Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin are no longer in paradise together.
The Materialists actress and the Coldplay artist—who first sparked relationship speculation in 2017 and later got engaged—have called it quits after nearly eight years together, multiple sources confirmed to People June 4.
E! News has reached out to reps for comment and has not heard back.
While Dakota, 35, and Chris, 49—last photographed together in May—remained very private throughout their romance, they quickly shut down split rumors that emerged in August.
“Not true,” a rep told E! News at the time, “they are happily together.”
As for why they kept much of their relationship out of the spotlight?
“It is important to say that [romantic love] is such a big factor in everything,” Chris—who shares kids Apple Martin, 21, and Moses Martin, 19, with ex Gwyneth Paltrow—explained in December’s Rolling Stone cover story, “even though it feels right to keep it precious and private; I’m not denying its power.”

And although they preferred not to address headlines about their relationship, the Fifty Shades star did shut down pregnancy speculation in 2018.
“The only thing I’m pregnant with is a lot of really good ideas,” she told Ellen DeGeneres at the time. “But not any babies.”

Indeed, due to the interest in their relationship and their busy schedules, Dakota and Chris spent much of their private time, in private.
“We’ve been together for quite a while,” she told Elle UK in 2021. “We go out sometimes, but we both work so much that it’s nice to be at home and be cozy and private. Most of the partying takes place inside my house.”

Dakota, daughter of Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith, was also mindful of Chris’ blended family.
“Maybe I think about relationships like that differently because I grew up in my family,” she explained to Vanity Fair in 2022. “We were all cool.”
“Obviously, there were times where it was not cool,” she added, “but I experienced that, so I don’t want that in my life. I don’t want any kids to experience anything like that. It’s better to be kind, and it’s also really nice that everybody actually really loves each other and has each other’s backs.”
While Dakota and Chris are no longer in perfect harmony, keep reading to revisit their relationship over the years.
