I found a dime in the dirt worth $192k – it didn’t look like it at first but the ‘satin smooth’ finish made it cost more

RARE coins can be worth thousands of dollars and have been found throughout a number of unexpected spots.

One coin connected to a Civil War era stash ended up being worth $192,000 thanks to its rarity and quality.

Coins found in the dirt of a battle site turned out to be treasure.

This rare dime, however, was in particularly good condition.

What was originally worth just 10 cents has skyrocketed in value, due in part to its appearance.

THE COIN

According to auctioneering website Heritage Auctions, the coin had a “satin smooth” finish.

MINT CONDITIONS

Your coin could be worth $600,000 thanks to the missing ‘mint mark’

“The coin is supremely lustrous, but these attributes are not immediately apparent at first glance,” the listing said.

The dime is notable for its old-fashioned design.

On one side, it features the personification of Liberty, sitting over a shield.

On the other side, the coin shows branches surrounding the words “ten cents.”

This particular specimen, from 1860, has a colorful pattern on the aged metal.

Rare coins like this have gained significant value as collectors’ items.

As a result, many historic coins are in museums or private collectors’ hands.

That, in turn, makes them even rarer.

This 1860 coin sold in August 2022 after selling multiple times for around $50,000 in the 1990s.

COIN CRAZE

Social media has been a boon to the coin collecting industry, or “numismatics.”

TikTok accounts like Eric Miller’s, (@thecoinchannel) have popularized the old hobby.

For example, Miller recently shared a modern dime worth 1000x its face value.

A professional coin expert recently shared with The U.S. Sun how people can get started in coin collecting.

He said that international coins could be the key to building a valuable collection.
