Ellen DeGeneres Says Donald Trump Is The Reason She Permanently Moved to England: ‘Everything Here Is Just Better’

Ellen DeGeneres Confirms Move to the UK After Trump’s Re-Election. Ellen DeGeneres has confirmed that she and her wife, Portia de Rossi, have permanently relocated to the UK — a decision sparked by Donald Trump’s re-election in 2024. Speaking at a live event in Cheltenham in July 2025, Ellen said, “We arrived the day before the election. He got in. We said, ‘We’re staying here.’”

The couple initially bought a home in the Cotswolds as a retreat, but the political climate in the U.S. convinced them to stay. Ellen, 67, praised the peace, nature, and slower pace of life in the English countryside, and said animals and people are treated better there.

She also expressed concern about the direction of the U.S., especially regarding LGBTQ+ rights. Referencing efforts by the Southern Baptist Convention to challenge same-sex marriage, she added, “If that happens, we’ll get married here again.”

Reflecting on her talk show’s end, Ellen admitted she could be blunt, but said media coverage often exaggerated her behavior for headlines.

Her move reflects a growing trend — after the 2024 election, many Americans began exploring relocation abroad. Ellen says the UK has given her a fresh start, far from the chaos of U.S. politics.
